This regular newsletter from GIZ’s Social Protection Programme describes their most recent activities in Malawi. Find out what the team has been up to, with regards to COVID-19-related emergency support, and helping district officers to travel more easily.

COVID-19 response

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many countries around the world including Malawi. To protect communities from the pandemic, GIZ has been working with the Government of Malawi to address the situation.

Cooperation includes:

  • supporting district councils to train health workers on COVID-19 prevention and management
  • training district and community actors involved in social protection to also take COVID-19 hygiene measures
  • providing hygiene equipment such as hand sanitiser, hand soap and buckets to many districts.

Mobility for district staff

Mobility is crucial for the implementation of the Malawi National Social Support Programme (MNSSP) II at the community level and to enable district staff to engage properly with the people they serve. However, districts often face resource constraints that hinder staff mobility.

To address this problem, GIZ has handed over 16 motorcycles to district councils to support the implementation of the MNSSP II. District officers from Dowa, Karonga, Nsanje and Chiradzulu and officers from the Poverty Reduction and Social Protection Division received the motor-bikes on behalf of the 16 district councils.
